Just wanted to clarify that a gigawatt is a unit of power, not energy. A watt is a joule per second, so you can think of it as a rate or velocity at which the energy could be supplied. If someone, like Das Mann and Cusolito, said the oil well could “power the entire Bay Area for one minute,” then they were either mistaken, or they knew of some other number. Possibly the writer from Wired magazine, where you retrieved this information, did not know the difference between power and energy. It is a common mistake to confuse the two.
